Many people have the same image of golf in mind
Elegant clothing, perfectly manicured fairways, silence and maximum concentration. A “gentleman's sport” where every movement matters.
And that is… partly true.
If someone plays golf competitively and enters serious tournaments, then every shot really does count. Focus, discipline and precision are essential.
But golf has another side too. A much more relaxed, human – and often genuinely funny – side.
Did you know, for example, that according to some sayings a golf course has 18 holes because that is the ideal number for finishing a bottle of whiskey?
Many people know the “wilder” version of golf from the film Happy Gilmore – when the main character runs at the ball, loses his temper, or ends up in completely absurd situations on the course. Of course, this is exaggerated Hollywood humour, but the idea behind it is real: golf is full of unexpected and sometimes genuinely hilarious moments.
Because before anyone confidently walks around a golf course, everyone goes through the same things: mishit shots, rolling balls, “I hope nobody saw that!” moments and nerve-racking, frustrating situations when luck simply was not on their side.
What specific situations do we mean? Here are a few that have reached us through various legends:
- According to some stories, before a three-day tournament a bet was once made that if the player won, he would jump into the lake. It gave him extra motivation, and after winning he eventually jumped into the lake together with his fellow players.
- Day after day, balls land perfectly on the fairway after the tee shot. But there are also players who enjoy a challenge and decide that the fairway of another hole is a more attractive place to continue from. Has that ever happened to you?
- We have also heard of a case where a player's ball was already in such poor condition that it ended up in a bin next to the tee – the only small problem being that it got there as the result of a shot.
- Once, a player was having a particularly bad round and angrily threw his golf set into the lake. He then kindly gave the marshal the opportunity to retrieve it because his car key was still in the bag. The marshal helped and handed the key back to the frustrated player. The golf set, however, landed in the water again, and in the end the player had to fish it out himself.
Golf is not great because everything always goes perfectly. It is great because every round holds something unexpected. A moment to laugh about. An experience you will remember again and again.
And perhaps that is exactly why it is so easy to fall in love with it.
Stories like these are born every day on the course at Zala Springs Health & Golf Resort. Beginners, returning players and experienced golfers alike discover that golf is not only about performance – it is also about the experience.
Because in the end, what matters is not how many shots it took you to reach the hole. What matters is whether you enjoyed yourself along the way.
