“Golf isn't even a sport” – and other myths it's time to leave behind
“Golf isn't even a sport.” “It's a hobby for the rich.” “It's not for me.” “It's boring.” Sound familiar?
Golf is surrounded by many misconceptions. Many consider it an expensive sport, mainly a hobby for older, wealthy men, or even question whether it is a sport at all. The reality is far more diverse.
1. Golf is expensive and only the wealthy can afford it
As with many other sports, golf offers both more affordable and more expensive options, new and used equipment, as well as courses and lessons at different levels. You do not necessarily need your own equipment to take your first steps.
2. Golf is a sport for older people
One of golf's special qualities is that it can be played regardless of age. Young people, families, groups of friends and older players can all find their own challenge and enjoyment in it.
3. It is a solitary sport
Of course you can practise alone, but golf is typically a social experience. Golfers often play the course in groups, leaving plenty of opportunity for conversation and building new connections.
4. It isn't a real sport
The golf swing is one of the most complex movements in sport. An accurate shot requires balance, core work, shoulder and hip movement, coordination, technique and concentration at the same time.
5. Golfers only walk
During a full round, players cover a considerable distance, while the shots, reading the course, club selection and strategy also require continuous mental focus.
To perform well in golf, you need to stay in the present: every shot is a new situation, a new decision and a new opportunity.
6. There is no variety in it
Golf offers many different formats. Alongside stroke play, the team-based Texas Scramble is popular, and there are also speed-based and various challenge formats.
7. You always have to be silent while playing
Golf etiquette requires players not to disturb one another during shots. That does not mean the golf experience itself cannot be social, relaxed and full of good humour.
8. There is no excitement or risk
A great shot, a difficult obstacle, a bunker, water, or even the possibility of a hole-in-one keeps the game exciting. Every hole on the course calls for a different decision.
9. Only men play
Golf is certainly not exclusively a men's sport. Women and men, amateurs and professionals play it worldwide, and women's golf also has an active community in Hungary.
10. Beginners and better players cannot play together
One of the purposes of the handicap system is precisely to allow players of different skill levels to play together with comparable results and a shared playing experience.
Golf is therefore far more than the stereotypes surrounding it suggest: it combines movement, concentration, nature, social experience and continuous development.
